PORTLAND, Ore. – Hundreds gathered in Portland’s Waterfront Park on Tuesday night for the “PDX Impeach & Remove Protest,” held on the eve of the House's vote on the articles of impeachment.

The protest was hosted by the group Stand On Every Corner. The event lasted through the evening commute, remaining peaceful.

The group lined Natio Parkway while carrying signs, getting honks from passing drivers through.

"Keeping it peaceful shows that we’re responsible, and keeps us from tipping over into a broader spreading of street violence," James Spake said.

This was just one of hundreds of impeachment rallies and protests that took place around the country on Tuesday. In Oregon, demonstrators also held rallies at the Oregon State Capitol, in downtown Eugene, and in Medford.

Republicans and Democrats say they're waiting to see what's next with the articles of impeachment. Both sides tell KATU they're unsure what will happen Wednesday, but they believe the entire process will have an impact on next year's election.

"This will not stand. It will not stand. I think there's enough people in this country that are just fed up with this. Something needs to happen, and this is just one way of making our voices heard,” said Kris Zorko, who was in attendance on Tuesday night.

Republicans said they believe the impeachment process is a sham.

“We think it’s a hollow process and one that’s moved forward on such a partisan basis that there’s not a lot of legitimacy to it. And we think that when it proceeds to the senate, it’s going to be disposed of quickly," said Kevin Hoar of the Oregon Republican Party.

Hoar said he believes the impeachment process is bringing his party together.

"It seems the more this process has moved forward, the more united republicans have become. It’s been such a shame," he said.

The group did not block traffic or start marching, and organizers worked with Portland Police on a safety plan for the event.
