Background

The Buckeye Reclamation Landfill site covers about 100 acres at a location 4 miles southeast of St. Clairsville and 1.2 miles south of Interstate 70 in Belmont County, Ohio. Coal mine waste disposal activities and landfill operations took place in the area for several decades. Deep underground coal mining occurred near the site until the early 1950s, and a landfill operated on-site from 1971 to 1991. The landfill received solid industrial and municipal wastes, as well as industrial sludge and liquids.
