Wyton on the Hill Primary School

Saunders Boston Architects were appointed to provide full architectural design and lead consultant services to develop a new 1.5FE  Primary School with a 40 place Pre-school adjacent to the existing school, which remains operational until the new school is completed.

The sustainable and contemporary design makes a positive contribution to the surrounding environment responding to the clients’ key aspirations, reflecting the rural setting, history and ethos of a family orientated village school. The school creates an inspiring, comfortable, and memorable space that is stimulating and conductive to achieving excellent standards of working and learning. The school is source of pride and inspiration for the whole community. Split into 3 distinct elements, pre-school, learning resource and teaching wing; each of which is expressed differently, to create an interesting articulated elevation; The proposal carefully considers the access and scale of development and how it forms and marks the entrance to the site. The building perimeter frames a new public piazza creating a sense of arrival.

"I think I underestimated how positive the impact would be on the children's learning and general behaviour. The school has always felt really busy, and still does to an extent, but there’s now a new purpose and sense of calm to what we do... It’s more than just a building."
