Proof

by David Auburn
directed by Charles Newell

Mar 07, 2013 — Apr 07, 2013

4 Stars “revelatory new take … simply breathtaking… You may well have seen ‘Proof,’ but you’ve not seen this ‘Proof.'” -Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune

“Like the play, this production is exceedingly smart. More importantly, it is fierce… ideal cast and inspired design team” -Hedy Weiss, Chicago Sun-Times

The Pulitzer Prize-winning play set in Hyde Park comes home to Court Theatre in an inspired new production by Artistic Director Charles Newell.

Genius mathematician and University of Chicago professor Robert is struggling with mental illness.  His fiercely brilliant yet emotionally fragile daughter Catherine is trying to pick up the pieces of her life.  Caught between a new-found connection with one of Robert’s former students and the reappearance of her sister, Claire, Catherine’s world becomes increasingly unstable. As she struggles to find herself amid her father’s world of hidden complexities and tantalizing secrets, she is forced to face the possibility of inheriting both her father’s creative genius and his terrifying mental illness.

In Conversation with David Auburn

Long before he wrote Proof, playwright David Auburn was a student at the University of Chicago, where he wrote short comic sketches for Off-Off Campus, the university’s improv and sketch comedy group. Mr. Auburn spoke to Court’s Resident Dramaturg, Drew Dir, about being one of the UofC’s most celebrated alumni authors.
