Ophthalmology

The mission of the Department of Ophthalmology is to reduce vision-threatening eye diseases through clinical care, research, teaching, and community service. The goal is to provide the most effective and advanced management of ocular diseases and complex vision problems for the local, state, regional, national, and international communities.

UVA Ophthalmology is committed to excellence in education. We offer a fully accredited ophthalmic residency program, glaucoma and retina fellowship programs, and optometry residency program.  

The department offers comprehensive ophthalmic care as well as the following sub-specialties: anterior segment/cornea, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, oculo-plastics, pediatric eye care, uveitis, refractive, medical and surgical retina, and optometry. UVA Ophthalmology prides itself in furthering knowledge of eye care through medical training and research.

Ophthalmology Education Programs

The UVA Ophthalmology Education Programs include a 4 year ophthalmology residency, a 1 year glaucoma fellowship, a 2 year retina fellowship, and a 1 year optometry residency, as well as a 3 month optometry extern program.
