We love recognizing naturalized citizens who are making a difference in their communities and their adopted country. This #ArabAmericanHeritageMonth, we were proud to recognize Basma Alawee as an Outstanding American by Choice during a naturalization ceremony in Jacksonville where we welcomed 20 #NewUSCitizens. Basma is an Iraqi refugee who works tirelessly on behalf of refugees and immigrants. She’s the deputy executive director at the Community Sponsorship Hub and made history as the first refugee advisor on the U.S. government delegation to the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. This #NationalParkWeek we celebrate the history of immigration. Major entry points for immigrants that are now national parks include Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration and Golden Gate National Park. Lowell National Historical Park, César E. Chávez National Monument, and Spike National Historical Park help tell the stories of immigrant workers.

As we honor #DeafHistoryMonth we celebrate French immigrant Louis Laurent Marie Clerc, one of the creators of American Sign Language. In 1816 he came to the U.S. to work with Thomas Gallaudet to teach sign language and found the first school for the deaf in the country.
