Vermonters rally for impeachment

Impeachment rallies take place across the region

On Tuesday, over 500 rallies happened nationwide, at least one in all 50 states, to support the impeachment of President Donald Trump. In our region, a handful of demonstrations took place in areas like South Burlington, Middlebury, Essex Junction, Rutland, Plattsburgh and Saranac Lake. This comes a day before a historic impeachment vote on the House floor on two articles-- abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. "For him to be on the phone talking to a foreign power saying dig up dirt on my opponents that is just so un-American it is just beyond belief," said Howard Jennings, of Bristol, who attended the Middlebury rally. The abuse of power charge alleges the president urged Ukraine to help during his reelection campaign by digging up dirt on opponents. The obstruction of Congress charge alleges the president prevented testimony and declined to give up documents during the impeachment inquiry. "If people don't stand up to this, then it allows this subversion of democracy to continue and to go unchallenged," said demonstrator Jack Mayer, of Middlebury. The rallies in Middlebury and Essex brought close to 100 demonstrators each, hoping it will sway representatives to be on what they believe is the right side of history.
