Viewers flocked to catch the first episode of the long-awaited sequel to Telemundo's La Reina del Sur - the groundbreaking and immensely popular series that shattered the network's ratings records in 2011.

It looks like the huge investment in the sequel - its most ambitious series to date - has paid off.

The premiere of La Reina del Sur was a big hit, reaching a cumulative audience of almost three million total viewers. It ranked as the No. 1 broadcast television show in the U.S. at 10 p.m. among the coveted demographic of adults 18-49, averaging 1.26 million viewers - more than double Univision’s audience.

Reina even outperformed English-language shows on CBS and ABC in that timeslot and was the No. 1 broadcast television program regardless of language among adults 18-34 (495K) in overall primetime, according to Nielsen.

Locally, the Telemundo hit "super series" ranked No.1 regardless of language in New York, Miami, Houston and Dallas among adults 18-49.

The action-packed first episode of the second season was the most social drama series regardless of language on its premiere night, generating 584,000 actions across social platforms and 707,000 native views on Facebook.

A day after its debut, audiences were watching episode one on Telemundo.com and the Telemundo App.

“We’re thrilled with the audience reaction to the second season of La Reina Del Sur," says Marcos Santana, President, Telemundo Global Studios. "The production investment, the level of the talent and the contemporary storyline resonated with millions of fans. We are proud to be setting a new standard with a production level never seen before in Spanish language media and a quality that is comparable to the best series in the market.”

Season 2 of La Reina del Sur, which consists of 60 episodes, was shot on location in eight countries. Telemundo brought back actress Kate Del Castillo to reprise her role as Teresa Mendoza, as well as many of the actors involved in the first season.

Created by Arturo Pérez-Reverte, Roberto Stopello, Juan Marcos Blanco, Miguel Ferrari, and Jose Miguel Nuñez wrote season two of La Reina del Sur,  a co-production between Telemundo Global Studios and Netflix. Telemundo has the exclusive rights in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, and Netflix has the exclusive rights for the rest of the world for OTT.
