Muslim Civil Rights Bill Reaches Critical Mass of Support in Congress

More than 200 House Members Co-Sponsoring the NO BAN Act, a Historic Bill to End the Muslim Ban

WASHINGTON, DC — This week, 203 members of the House of Representatives have been confirmed as co-sponsors of the NO BAN Act (H.R. 2214), a bill to end President Trump’s Muslim Ban and end religious discrimination in our immigration laws. To date, Congress has never passed a bill to specifically protect the rights of American Muslims.

Muslim Advocates and its allies are urging the remaining 35 House Democrats who have not yet declared their support to join as co-sponsors and for House leadership to move the bill forward with a historic markup and floor vote.

“Religious bans are wrong and House Democrats claiming to be on the side of civil and human rights have a responsibility to include American Muslims in that promise,” said Muslim Advocates Public Advocacy Director Scott Simpson.  “Co-sponsoring and holding a vote on this historic bill sends a signal that dignity and religious freedom is for every American family.”

The NO BAN Act—introduced earlier this year by Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) alongside a Senate bill (S. 1123) introduced by Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE)—has been steadily gaining support throughout the year, particularly after the first ever congressional hearing on the Muslim Ban in September. The bill is supported by a broad and diverse coalition of nearly 400 civil rights, faith, national security and community organizations as well as many leading companies such as Postmates, Airbnb and Pinterest.
