Kevin Borseth Retires from Coaching after Nearly Four Decades

4/10/2024 11:30:00 AM

GREEN BAY, Wis. - One of the most decorated coaching careers in collegiate women's basketball has come to an end. Green Bay women's basketball head coach Kevin Borseth, who coached for 37 seasons, including 21 with Green Bay, announced that he is retiring on Wednesday morning. Borseth addressed the media at a press conference at the Kress Center earlier today.

The University will launch a national search for a new head coach for the women's basketball program immediately. Parker Executive Search has been retained to assist with the search. Borseth will assist the program with recruiting efforts this spring.

Borseth's final year was much like most of his years as a coach, with the Phoenix winning a Horizon League Tournament Championship. The Bessemer, Mich. native won 14 tournament championships and 16 regular season championships at the helm of the program.

"I spent 42 years of my life doing this and it's not easy. It's something I really loved to do. It's been a thrill," said Borseth. "To wake up tomorrow morning and not be the head coach… it's going to hurt. It's been a long journey, and there are many people to thank."

"I've grown a lot as a coach over the course of these years, mostly in part because of the players," he continued. "The players teach you a lot more than you'll ever think. I've learned far more from the players than I've ever taught them. These players invest a lot of time and I've learned that players deserve a second chance. I want to thank the parents of the players. The parents go a long way in supporting the program says a lot. I want to thank the city of Green Bay for its support. The City of Green Bay has been remarkable to us. The support has been phenomenal. This doesn't happen without the support of the community."

"Kevin's legacy at UW-Green Bay will be unmatched," said Director of Athletics Josh Moon. "We are so grateful for his 20+ years of leadership, and the positive impact he has made on the student-athletes that have come through this program and all of the fans and friends of Phoenix women's basketball is truly special. It says a lot of about Kevin's character to make this decision now, considering the team we have coming back. He is always thinking about what's best for the program and this is another example of him paying it forward. Congratulations to Kevin and his family on a job well done, and the Borseth family will always be a part of the Phoenix family."

"The impact that Kevin Borseth has had on UW-Green Bay, Northeastern Wisconsin, and the game of Women's Basketball cannot be overstated," said UW-Green Bay Chancellor Michael Alexander.  "His passion for the game of basketball can only be matched by his passion for supporting his players, this University, and this region.  He is our GOAT.  13 NCAA Tournament appearances, 16 Horizon League titles, but perhaps most importantly, he has inspired countless people to believe in what is possible here.  I consider it an honor to have worked with Coach Borseth and cheered on his teams.  He leaves a legacy here that is wide-ranging and immense."

Borseth arrived in Titletown in 1998 after an 11-season stint with Division II Michigan Tech, where he compiled a 225-97 (.699) overall record and a 147-54 (.731) GLIAC record. He made an immediate impact after taking over for legendary head coach Carol Hammerle, going 19-10 in his first season before recording his first 20+ win season in 1999-2000. Borseth departed Green Bay to become Michigan's head coach from 2007-2012, completing his five-year tenure as a Wolverine with an 87-73 (.544) record and a 38-48 (.442) record in the Big Ten. He returned to Green Bay in 2012 and immediately racked up a 29-3 season, going 16-0 in conference action while making the NCAA Tournament First Round. Borseth ends his career at Green Bay with a 509-147 (.777) record and a 308-46 (.870) record in the Horizon League.
