In addition to being used in household products and clothing, did you know that #PFAS are used in #hydrogen #electrolyzers? A report from Hydrogen Europe states that there is, "No alternative [is] foreseen to be able to substitute today or in the near future these highly specialised materials [fluoropolymers], central to the functioning of the hydrogen value chain." As we continue to strive towards the #energytransition, we know that #PFAS are a part of the conversation in creating renewable fuels, and we want to help hydrogen producers destroy PFAS effectively in their wastewater streams! The Coflux team is coming off of two weeks of learning, wins, and begins to delve into a summer of work! Last week, Dana Vazquez led the pitch at the Liu Idea Lab for Innovation & Entrepreneurship's Napier Rice Launch Challenge, securing the second place prize and the audience choice award! We are so incredibly grateful for the entrepreneurship community at Rice University that continues to provide great opportunities to share our technology with the world. Our other two co-founders, Alec Ajnsztajn and Jeremy Daum immediately got on a flight up to Boston, to compete as a finalist in the MIT Climate and Energy Prize - we loved hearing more about the incredible climate tech startups coming from universities across the country. This was Rice's first time being represented in the global finals! As the spring pitch season comes to a close, we are really excited for a summer of deep work and acceleration on Coflux!

The team has two back to back pitches this week, sharing our tech with communities near and far! Today, Dana Vazquez is pitching at the Napier Rice Launch Challenge, hosted by Rice’s Liu Idea Lab for Innovation & Entrepreneurship. Alec Ajnsztajn and Jeremy Daum are heading up to Boston for the MIT Climate and Energy Prize, pitching with startups from around the world! This is all in addition to HUGE news that PFAS is officially classified as a hazardous substance, creating more stringency around disposal! 🎉 checkout more in the linked materials below, but we couldn’t be more excited at the opportunities ahead for our technology application.

Today's the day! 💧 ✨ HUGE news in the water community, with the first ever #national drinking water #standard being finalized, with a distinct focus on #PFAS. Our team is reading through all of the materials published by the #EPA, but we are filled with joy and hope for the support in providing a better solution to #capture and #destroy PFAS. Yesterday, the EPA also released distinct interim guidance guidance on PFAS destruction and disposal systems, including an emerging technologies evaluation framework that are we thrilled to dig into. Join us, along with so many of our incredible peers at Rice, supporting student-led businesses as we compete for the opportunity to win over $100k in equity free funding! 📍 Grand Hall, Rice Memorial Center on April 16th ⏰ 5:30-8:30PM Register to attend here: https://lu.ma/dawz89fk
One of the key missions of any university entrepreneurship center is to 🛫 ELEVATE 🛫 and 🎉 CELEBRATE 🎉 the student founders who choose to be different, bet on themselves and create new ventures where none existed before So as Rice University's entrepreneurship center, we always love to end every academic year with a bang. We'd love to see you join us at this year's Napier Rice Launch Challenge Championship and reception to cheer on the best and brightest startups from every corner of the Rice campus. This year +100 student ventures started in Lilie's classes & co-curricular programs, and ended up competing in NRLC 2024. Over fifty judges from startup communities around the world winnowed the field down these past few weeks to our Final Five companies: Solidec - Ryan DuChanois, Yang Xia & Haotian Wang This team from Lilie's 2023 Innovation Fellows program has developed a new solid electrolyzer that can literally create the most sought after molecules out of thin air, using the carbon it captures as feedstock to create next generation carbon negative chemicals. Bonfire - Ben Liu & Michael Mounajjed This undergraduate team from Rice Computer Science have built the mobile app for local events, getting +1000 Rice student users since launching a few weeks ago. HEXAspec - Tianshu Zhai & Chen-Yang Lin This team from Lilie's 2024 Innovation Fellows program is using their novel new material to improve heat management for the semiconductor industry, saving energy and millions of gallons of water used to cool data centers. Women's Wave - Nabeeha Ghani & Cassandra Cromer (Wagoner) This undergraduate team is building a platform for women 20-40 to meet one another, enjoy local experiences together, and walk away with their new best friend. Their friendship matchmaking AI brings the right people together at the right time, with ~100 paying customers in the last 6 weeks. Coflux Purification - Jeremy Daum, Dana Vazquez & Alec Ajnsztajn This team from Lilie's 2024 Innovation Fellows program has created a new system to capture and permanently destroy the toxic PFAS forever chemicals that are in our bodies, brains, and every water source on the planet. Our Final Five will have their turn on the stage and in the spotlight on April 16th in the beautiful Grand Hall in the Rice Memorial Center, from 5:30-8:30pm. They'll be competing for their share over +$100,000 in equity free funding to take their companies to the next level! Registration link in the comments below!

We are always digging around to see where #pfas is showing up the most - in a new study out of #Belgium, we can see these chemicals showing up in many of our everyday products. The top two sectors represented? #Medicaldevices and #textiles! Do any of these applications surprise you? Thank you to the FOD Economie / SPF Economie / FPS Economy and FPS Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment for this great, insightful research on PFAS in Belgium! A continued question around #PFAS is: how will the chemicals be #regulated and who pays for the solution? Right now, state and federal governments are pursuing multiple pathways to regulate PFAS. One of these ways is listing several PFAS substances as #hazardous substances under Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). While effective in the strict legal liability it imposes, the CERCLA approach could bear significant financial costs to anyone who comes into contact with these specific PFAS, even if they don't play a direct role in production or distribution. Water coalitions across the country continue to advocate for a ‘polluter pays’ approach, where the producers and users pay for #remediation, compared to those who find it.

Our Chief Commercial Officer, Dana Vazquez has spent the week at CERAWeek, thanks to TEX-E! If you are interested in learning more about our technology and how we help customers with PFAS destruction, reach out and we would love to meet you! The highlight of the week has been participating in the TEX-E Prize - Coflux came in second place, receiving $15,000 to support our commercialization efforts! We stood up with some incredible teams around Texas and continue to be inspired by the climatetech ecosystem here in Houston. Thank you to the entire TEX-E team (David Pruner, Julia Johansson, Ben Soltoff and more!) for the incredible opportunity. #ceraweek #texeprize #climatetech #houston

Feeling wicked lucky for a successful trip to Boston! On Friday, Jeremy Daum and Dana Vazquez pitched at MIT Climate and Energy Prize, making it to the finals in April.🏆 The team had the chance to network with the incredible startups competing, answer questions about our technology, and network with the community that supports the Prize. Huge thank you to our team of mentors from the CEP - Marc Davidson, Kavita Patel, and Jonathan Hinton - that really stepped up and helped us strengthen our pitch, and for William Harvey’s continued guidance and support, especially day of! We can’t wait to compete in April and look forward to continuing to share our technology with the world 🌍 #MITCEP #climate #pitchcompetition #waterinnovation #entrepreneurship
