Drew Carter, who joined ESPN in August 2021, is a play-by-play commentator and studio host. A versatile and talented broadcaster, Carter calls a variety of sports for ESPN, including college football, college basketball, men’s and women’s collegiate lacrosse, softball and the PLL.

In studio, Carter serves as a host for ACC Network and ESPN International, anchors domestic wraps for college sports across ESPN platforms, and is a fill-in host for ESPN Radio’s Freddie & Fitzsimmons, GameNight and Joe & Amber. He has also anchored editions of SportsCenter.

Beyond his traditional assignments, Carter has voiced some of ESPN’s most unique alternate presentations in recent years. In 2023, he called both the NHL Big City Greens Classic – the first-ever live, animated NHL game telecast, and the Pixar-inspired Toy Story Funday Football, a real-time, fully animated presentation of the NFL International Series game between the Atlanta Falcons and Jacksonville Jaguars.

In addition to his ESPN role, Carter has served as the local NBA play-by-play voice for Boston Celtics games on NBC Sports Boston since September 2023.

Prior to ESPN, Carter was a sports anchor and reporter for CBS 42 in Birmingham, Ala., as well as the play-by-play commentator and manager of communications for the Auburn Doubledays from 2017-18. In addition, Carter served as the UAB women’s basketball play-by-play commentator while also filling play-by-play responsibilities for Big Ten Network.

Carter won the 2019 Jim Nantz Award as the nation’s most outstanding collegiate sportscaster, and he was named the 2020 Alabama Sports Anchor of the Year by the Alabama Broadcasters Association. He has been a member of the National Sports Media Association (NSMA) since 2015.

Carter graduated from Syracuse University in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast & Digital Journalism.
