Join the Chinese American Museum on Tuesday, March 19th at 6:30pm for the next installment of “Beyond the Page” for the West Coast launch of “Not Your China Doll: The Wild and Shimmering Life of Anna May Wong” by Katie Gee Salisbury. Salisbury’s debut book celebrates Anna May Wong, the first Asian American movie star, to bring an unsung heroine to light and reclaim her place in cinema history.

Explore in-depth the life of Anna May Wong behind the glittering backdrop of Los Angeles during the gin-soaked Jazz Age and the rise of Hollywood. Joining the conversation with Salisbury is pop culture specialist Nancy Wang Yuen.

About the Author:
Katie Gee Salisbury is the author of “Not Your China Doll”, a new biography of Anna May Wong, the first Asian American movie star. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, Vanity Fair, The Believer, the Asian American Writers’ Workshop, and elsewhere. She was a finalist for the Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship in 2021 and gave the TED Talk “As American as Chop Suey”. She also writes the newsletter “Half-Caste Woman”. A fifth-generation Chinese American who hails from Southern California, she now lives in Brooklyn.

** CAM’s “Beyond the Page” series features conversations with AAPI authors and focuses on amplifying Asian American voices and their diverse experiences.

Join the Chinese American Museum and Miss Rita from the Los Angeles Public Library’s Chinatown branch for this month’s Kids Storytime on Thursday, January 11th at 4pm PST. Miss Rita will be reading “This is Not My Home” by Vivienne Chang and Eugenia Yoh.

This book is suitable for ages 4-8, though we welcome children of all ages with parental supervision.

“Kids Storytime” is hosted in partnership with the Chinatown Branch Library with stories read by Children’s Librarian Rita Law.

About the book:

Co-written and illustrated by Vivienne Chang and Eugenia Yoh, “This is Not My Home” is about a fourth grader named Lily who immigrates from the United States to the Taiwan to care for her grandmother. Lily is scared and upset to leave behind her life and friends. In Taiwan, school is difficult for her, and she feels sad. However, through friendship, family, and love, she begins to see that the United States and Taiwan can both be home for her. The book features a unique cartoon illustration style that captures Lily’s emotions.

About the authors:

“This is Not My Home” is the first children’s book from authors Vivienne Cheng and Eugenia Yoh. The writing and illustrating duo met at Washington University. Eugenia studied Communication Design and works for Chronicle Books, and Vivienne studies Economics. They hope their books tell relatable stories through humor.

We are excited to host an illustrious group of experts in the areas of history, human rights, and activism to explore what took place during the Chinese Massacre of 1871 and examine the lessons it holds for today and for the future. The two-day event convenes from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Pico House and will also be streamed online. Piano virtuoso, composer, and music director Nathan Wang will be accompanied by musicians playing western and Chinese instruments along with vocalists to perform of his original composition commemorating the Chinese Massacre of 1871.

The Chinese American Museum will hold a two-day symposium to examine the Chinese Massacre of 1871, the result of mob violence that left 18 dead. The symposium will take place on Saturday, Dec. 9, and Sunday, Dec. 10, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Pico House. The symposium will also be streamed online. This event is a part of a series of public programs supported by the Smithsonian’s "Our Shared Future: Reckoning with Our Racial Past initiative", from Dec. 1-17.

Special guest speakers will delve deeper into the historical implications of the tragedy to reckon with our racial past and help drive positive social change in the future.

On October 24, 1871, over 500 Los Angeles residents entered Chinatown, hunted down, and killed as many Chinese immigrants as they could find. Considered to be one of the bloodiest massacres against Asians in United States history, the Chinese Massacre of 1871 was the culmination of growing anti-Chinese sentiment, which led to racially motivated violence.

Stop AAPI Hate and The Democracy Center at the Jap

Stop AAPI Hate and The Democracy Center at the Japanese American National Museum are proud to present an evening with Curtis Chin, a celebrated filmmaker and author of the new memoir, Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant. The memoir chronicles Curtis’ life growing up Asian American in the Black and White city of Detroit, coming out in his working-class immigrant community, as well as being a first-generation college student at the University of Michigan.

Community partners include the Asian American Journalists Association LA, Chinese American Museum, Chinese Historical Society of Southern California, OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates Greater Los Angeles, Chinese American Citizens Alliance of Los Angeles, Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Los Angeles County, and Southern California Chinese Lawyers Association.

On Tuesday, October 24th, the Chinese American Mus

On Tuesday, October 24th, the Chinese American Museum will host our Annual Commemoration of the Los Angeles Chinese Massacre of 1871, in remembrance of the eighteen lives lost during the tragedy.

Join us online or in-person at 7:00pm PDT, where we will be featuring remarks from keynote speaker Dr. José Zapata Calderón, a recognized author, activist, and professor. He will be addressing race and discrimination in today's volatile social climate. Additionally, FCAM Board Chair Dr. Gay Yuen, will lead our annual candlelight vigil, followed by the traditional Chinese bowing ceremony to honor the spirits of the victims of the massacre.
