Why this petition matters

Started by Brody Students

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, universities across the country are holding virtual graduations to comply with social distancing guidelines. East Carolina University has followed along in this national trend, scheduling a virtual graduation for the entire institution on Friday May 8th at 10 AM. However, guidelines around this year's commencement have included regulations preventing any individual school or program holding graduation ceremonies specific to that individual school or program until June. These rules prohibit any virtual events that resemble a traditional departmental graduation, which is usually smaller, more personal and more memorable to graduates and their guests. The Brody School of Medicine class of 2020 as well as their friends, families and loved ones are saddened, confused and frustrated by these regulations. Earning the title of "Medical Doctor" is no small feat and represents an incredible investment of resources, time and emotion. This achievement is one that deserves to be celebrated, but given the current regulations, our ability to celebrate has been taken away. While we applaud the universities endeavor to create an event that celebrates all graduates of the institution, we implore the ECU administration to allow us some semblance of a normal School of Medicine graduation as it has in years past, and as other medical schools across the country are planning to do. "The Brody Family" is a term that is often used to describe the tight knit community of students, faculty and staff within the medical school, and this sense of community is what ties us to the school and the university at large. Every year since the schools founding in 1969, the Brody Family has been able to gather and celebrate it's graduates as they make their next step in their training to care for Eastern North Carolina. Please help us ensure that we can carry on this tradition.

By signing this petition, you will be indicating that you stand with the Brody family and hope to encourage ECU to allow the Brody School of Medicine to hold its own graduation ceremony for these future frontline healthcare workers.
