What are the schedule options for bus drivers at Valley Transit?

  • Bid Schedules: Based on availability, through a seniority-based union bidding process, drivers choose their work schedules three times per year.  
  • Stand-by Driver Schedule: Based on availability through a seniority-based union bidding process, stand-by schedules may be available. This schedule is ideal for those who thrive in dynamic environments as this role involves adapting to varying shifts to cover for absences on a daily dispatch basis. Assignments can vary greatly, including shifts from two to 10 hours long and split shifts.  

What if I don’t have a CDL? Can I still apply to be a bus driver?

No CDL? No problem! We provide Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training to get you road ready 

What are some required skills to be a bus driver?

You should enjoy driving, be proficient at defensive driving and have the ability to navigate stressful situations on the road with calm and composure. It is important to have a genuine enjoyment of interacting with people and a commitment to delivering outstanding customer service.

Candidates must have a clean driving record, consistency in work history and the ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen, Federal Medical physical, Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) and background check. 

What benefits do Valley Transit employees receive?

Valley Transit is a department of the City of Appleton. Full-time employees are afforded full benefits including medical and dental benefits, retirement, life insurance, long-term disability insurance and paid leave benefits.  Part-time employees are non-benefitted.

Do I need previous driving experience to apply as a bus driver?

You do not need previous experience as a professional driver to apply for as a bus driver. However, having a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record is essential. We are looking for candidates who are eager to serve our community of passengers. If you’re the right fit, we will provide you with comprehensive training to equip you with all the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed as a bus driver.
