ABOUT DR. MICHAEL C. LIU

Michael believes in the underrated impacts of story-sharing and the creative strengths everyone is born with.

Combing his experience and passion as an educator, performing artist, non-profit professional, fundraiser, and life coach, Michael founded Global Cultural Competency, LLC, with a generous grant from the New York Foundation for the Arts in 2021, to deepen and expand the impacts of arts on cross-cultural understanding for every human being in the country and around the world.

A Leadership Fellow (2017-2019) of the Association of Performing Arts Professionals, Michael found his calling when he began teaching at the Department of Ethnic and Race Studies at Borough of Manhattan Community College in the City University of New York and at the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures in Fashion Institute of Technology in the State University of New York. Every interaction he has had with students and clients of all backgrounds, nationalities, and interests motivates him to unleash the power of arts inherent in every person.

As a creative professional, Michael foresees the challenges and overcomes obstacles at every job—in and outside of the office. He has executed numerous projects of various scales and disciplines in Taiwan and the U.S. He tripled the annual revenue for an Off-Off-Broadway theatre in two years and helped several other non-profits surpass their financial goals. He recently appeared on stage at the Tony®-Award winning Manhattan Theater Club production titled “Golden Shield,” for which TheatreMania said, "Liu gave one of the most emotionally wrenching performances of the year." Michael has also received critical acclaim in other roles, such as Anton Chekhov in I Take Your Hand in Mine, Robert in Betrayal, Dr. Luis Feldman in Duet for One, and Robert in Proof, among others. A lifelong arts advocate, Michael has collaborated with artists, organizations, and companies to foster community engagement with artistic and cultural experiences.

As a critical thinker, Michael's recent research—How Arts Integration Affects College Teachers and Students' Cultural Competence: A Grounded Theory Research—merges the powers of everyone's artistic intuitions and cultural competencies. His peer-reviewed article titled Cultural competence and online learning in the wake of COVID-19: A critical review of the literature was published by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) in Technology and Higher Education: Emerging Practice.

An immigrant from Taiwan living his American dream in New York, Michael is dedicated to building bridges among those feeling conflicted and misrepresented, enhancing more meaningful understanding between people from different cultures and socioeconomic status; fostering and enhancing everyone's creative capacities; and—above all—offering his attentive ears to anyone that needs to be listened to.
