The Kennet & Avon Canal is a wonderful way to travel along part of the Great West Way. This ribbon of beauty and history stretches between Reading and Bristol and is looked after by the Canal & River Trust.

Golden sun on tranquil waters, rippled by the bow of your boat. Insects dancing across the water as dozy cows look on from the bankside. The lazy pop pop pop of the engine while you travel slowly through attractive towns like Hungerford, quaint villages such as Wootton Rivers and architectural masterpieces like Bath. Boating on the Kennet & Avon Canal gently recalibrates your busy everyday life. Find out how to travel the Great West Way by narrowboat.

Yet you certainly don’t need to be on a boat to enjoy this glorious canal. You could make a picnic and walk or cycle the towpath. Surrounded by summertime damselflies, butterflies and birdsong, your wellbeing will soar sky high. Stop at one of the many canalside cafés and pubs; you’ll find them in quiet spots such as Honeystreet, charming Bradford on Avon and bustling Newbury.

Your route will pass wonderful structures of a bygone age, like Avoncliff Aqueduct and Dundas Aqueduct. The canal opened for business in 1810 and many of its buildings date from then or earlier. For those of you who like technology, Crofton and Claverton pumping stations provide ingenious solutions for replenishing the canal with water. Of course, the famous Caen Hill Lock Flight in Devizes is a real wow – look up from the bottom of the 16 locks that form the main ‘staircase’ – now that’s one way to get boats to travel uphill!
