The Pedro Gomez Scholarship Fund was established in honor of the life and legacy of Pedro Gomez, a talented and esteemed sports reporter who dedicated more than 30 years of his life covering baseball and made an impact on many in Arizona, including Cronkite students. Pedro’s many years as a beat writer, columnist and on-air sports reporter gained him a reputation as a smart, passionate and trusted sports journalist and his charisma and kindness earned respect from athletes, managers, owners, colleagues and fans. He loved sharing his experience, knowledge and passion with Cronkite students and often kept in touch with them long after he mentored them in class.

I am very grateful and thrilled to have received the inaugural Pedro Gomez Scholarship. I am very honored to be the first recipient of the award. Pedro Gomez was a role model of mine my whole life, as ESPN was always on my television and due to the fact that baseball was my first love in sports. I am also a Latin-American, so watching Pedro’s journey was truly inspiring. This scholarship will allow me to focus on my studies specifically in the fall as I am taking on a major school schedule, taking 24 credits. It will allow me some time to adjust and settle in rather than having to get a job right away to help pay for my transportation, tuition and housing."
Impact of Donor Support
- 56% of first-year students at Cronkite during the 2022-2023 academic year are pursuing a sports journalism degree.
- Cronkite sports journalism students receive hands-on experience in the Cronkite News Phoenix Sports Bureau, where they cover sports in the heart of the nation’s fifth-largest city. Phoenix is home to teams from all five major sports leagues, a Pac-12 university, two college bowl games, PGA and LPGA tournaments, NASCAR and spring training headquarters for half of the teams in Major League Baseball.
- Students have the opportunity to cover major sporting events around the world and have reported from the Olympic Games in London and Rio de Janeiro.
