Quotes

Tulane Head Coach Mark Booras
“It was all about what we were going to bring to the court with our attitude and our fight today. We had a little bit of a chip on our shoulder from a couple weeks ago, we played the same type of team on paper as we are and knew it was going to go one way or the other. It was just depending on who had the most fight and who had the most hunger. These guys came out today with a resilience that we needed, and that we had seen in previous parts of the year. We saw that in the doubles when we came back from being down and trusting what we’re doing with our gameplan, and coming out with that point. In singles, it was nice to get a bunch of first sets, but we also knew that the team was coming back. It was a 4-0 win, but we had four matches left in the third set, which could have gone either direction. Proud of the way the guys were resilient and fought their hardest, we were very disciplined emotionally and mentally today.”

“We’ve seen a lot of different formulas this year with this team, whether it’s with the seniors stepping up or the freshmen stepping up. Today we got that quick point from Luis (Erlenbusch), and Hamish (Stewart) was able to come back from being down in each set, those are huge things that we need to put a different kind of pressure on the other team. Their senior leadership showed today with how they responded to what the other team was bringing. That’s the thing about senior leadership. It’s not about how hard they can hit the ball, it’s about how they respond to the situation under pressure, and today they responded very well.”

“I like the way the freshmen stepped up to the plate, too. Billy (Suarez) had a huge clinch for us against one of their stronger points this year. We knew that match was going to be a real barn-burner. Billy showed that belief in his game, and the confidence he has gained this year from being in that situation a handful of times.”

Tulane’s Billy Suarez
“I was definitely very excited to play in my first NCAA Tournament. Tough start in doubles, but was able to turn around pretty quickly in singles. Overall I think it was a solid match for me, and I’m proud of my team for getting the job done on their courts as well. I’m excited to play tomorrow.”

“I think we’re definitely capable of taking the match tomorrow. We’re going to have to be on the top of our games with good energy and just believing in ourselves.”

Ole Miss Head Coach Toby Hansson
“I thought there were some jitters there in doubles. Belmont played very well and pushed us in doubles. After we were able to get the doubles point I think the guys settled in and showed the quality we have on the court and started to play some good tennis. Great season for Belmont, they won their conference and every team in this championship is a good team and they are a confident team. Great win for us, and we’re looking forward to the match tomorrow against Tulane.”

“I think it’s good to be back playing points again, even though our SEC season didn’t end that long ago. The way we played in singles, and we’ll make some adjustments for doubles tomorrow, but I saw some really good things in singles, some things we’ve been improving on individually as well as a team. I think the guys are feeling good, and obviously when you come off the court with a 4-0 win that gives you some confidence going into the match tomorrow.”

Ole Miss’ Tim Sandkaulen
“I feel great. That first match is always tough, especially hosting, we haven’t done that in a while, so I feel like we were all feeling the pressure a little bit being the top seed. I feel like doubles was a little ugly today, but we got it done in the end. In singles, I think everybody was pretty solid. (Nikola Slavic) and John (Hallquist Lithen) they got off to a hot start, which helped the other guys calm their nerves a little bit. Onto the next round.”

“We watched 10 or 15 minutes (of Tulane). I know some of the guys from Tulane, and it’s definitely going to be a tough match. I’ve played their No. 2 guy before, so it will be a tough match on every position, but I think if we do the things we’ve been working on all season we’ll be in good shape tomorrow.”

“Feels great. Very exciting, the guys did a tremendous job today.”

“I think we were ready to play, indoors or out. The guys were excited to play today for sure, I didn’t have to motivate them in any special way. I tried to treat it as any other match. Obviously it’s a different match in a way because it might be the last match of the season, but they just stuck to the routine, stayed focused and were executing well out there today.”

“I believe we’re playing some very good tennis. We’re finding a way to win the doubles point, and that’s very encouraging. From there on out today, we started off very quick in singles on court number four, and that helped continue the momentum in our favor. It was a team effort all the way, from top to bottom.”

Ole Miss’ John Hallquist Lithen
“I’m feeling great. I played maybe the best match of the season today. The whole team’s performance was very good, and I’m very pleased with the fact that we are through to Orlando and the Sweet 16.”

“(Clinching at home) was great. Due to COVID there were some restrictions, but we still managed to get some fans in, which was incredible. I think they did a great job of making an incredible atmosphere here.”

Ole Miss’ Lukas Engelhardt
“I feel very good, it was an awesome day. Great team effort today from everybody. It was a very important doubles point for us, it was very important we got a win there. John (Hallquist Lithen) was absolutely crushing his important today, and that was really important to give us a 2-0 lead. Simon (Junk) and I also got our job done. Second sweep in two days, really looking forward to the Sweet 16 and flying to Orlando.”
