News from the Brickyard

The Bray is NOW!

The Bray is thrilled to officially announce our updated brand!

We have  exciting news to share from our team — as you may have noticed, the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts is looking a little different these days.

After extensive research and development with various audiences, community and supporters we are excited to announce that we have evolved our brand, and will be launching a new website in the spring of 2022.

Part of the design aesthetic behind the new branding is to ensure it celebrates the sense of space at The Bray. Located in Helena, Montana near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, the 26-acre former brickyard serves as a gathering place for emerging and professional ceramic artists.

It was also important that our brand visually represented The Bray as a public, nonprofit creative center solely dedicated to the ceramic arts. The new look will become a visual marker to share this ethos to both the local community and the global ceramic arts world, and will push forward vibrant communication efforts to expand our network.

Founded in 1951 by brickmaker Archie Bray, the mission of The Bray is to enhance commitment to, and investment in, the ceramic arts. The exciting new brand will continue to move us forward as a leading artist-led organization that upholds this commitment.

Keep an eye on our website and Instagram to see the new brand in action, and thank you for your continued support of The Bray.

November is Native American Heritage Month
IllumiNative LogoAs we celebrate Native American Heritage month, we would like to celebrate the work Indigenous created and led organization IllumiNative.

Created and led by Native peoples, IllumiNative is a new nonprofit initiative designed to increase the visibility of – and challenge the negative narrative about – Native Nations and peoples in American society.

For decades, the lack of representation and information about Native peoples has perpetuated damaging myths and stereotypes. Native peoples rank at or near the bottom of most socio-economic indicators – such as educational attainment, domestic violence, and poverty – and are often portrayed in popular entertainment, the news media, educational curricula and other influential sources as ‘noble savages’ of days gone by. But research shows that a more powerful, more accurate, and more inspiring narrative about the contemporary Native experience – one of innovation, creativity, resilience and community – is being overlooked and obscured the negative one.

IllumiNative seeks to change that.

Amanda Wilkey captured this stunning light show the chilly evening of Tuesday, November 3rd. Although it is possible to see the Northern Lights in Montana, it is seldom experienced.

The Archie Bray Foundation recognizes and honors the Indigenous peoples of this region on whose ancestral lands the Foundation now stands. Indigenous people have inhabited the valley in which Helena is situated for more than 12,000 years; the valley acting as a crossover for Salish, Crow, Bannock, and Blackfeet tribes among others.

We respectfully acknowledge and honor all Indigenous communities whose land we reside on in what is now known as Montana— past, present, future—and are grateful for their ongoing and vibrant presence. We believe that acknowledging and reflecting upon the contemporary lived experience and history of the Indigenous peoples here in Montana and around the world are essential steps toward creating a more equitable world. Learn more through the #HonorNativeLand initiative of the U.S. Department of Arts and Culture, and consider contributing to Indigenous-led organizations doing important work to further health and wellness, sovereignty and self-determination of the first peoples of this land.
