Spring Flowering Perennials

Add color to your spring garden with a variety of plants. Spring bulbs, combined with early blooming perennials look great with the blossoms of Betty magnolia.

Spring perennials like long blooming hellebore have evergreen leaves, interesting blooms and are usually overlooked by the deer.

The delicate blue flowers of Brunnera make a great filler in the garden bed. The variegated leaves of many cultivars like Jack Frost brighten the shade throughout the season.

Lungwort's (Pulmonaria) funnel shaped flowers are favorites of hummingbirds and can be found in white, reddish-pink or pink fading to blue. The hairy leaves tend to discourage the deer and the variegated varieties lighten the shade.

The fine texture of the fern-leaf peony (Paeonia tenuifolia) is the perfect backdrop for single or double red flowers. Though the leaves fade in late summer their unique appearance has earned them a spot in many gardens.

A bit more information: The white spots on the leaves of lungwort give it the appearance of a diseased lung. This led to both the common name and the botanical name Pulmonaria (Latin for lung). Herbalists once believed when a plant resembled a body part it must have healing powers for it.
