Dr. Oz speaks with News 8 after announcing US Senate run
Dr. Mehmet Oz has kicked off his candidacy for the Republican nomination for Pennsylvania's open U.S. Senate seat.
He gave News 8's Barbara Barr one of his first interviews since announcing Tuesday that he's running to replace Republican Pat Toomey.
The 2022 race is critical for control of the Senate.
Oz responded to criticism that he has no deep ties to Pennsylvania.
"I take great pride in the fact that I spent my formative years in the Philadelphia area. My wife's family has been here for 100 years. We come back continually, and the ability to move back allowed me to also travel around the state. That's something I've done several times before but this time I literally went to every corner of the state. So, I feel big-time Pennsylvania," he said.
When asked if he was a resident of Montgomery County, he said, "I'm a resident of Montgomery County. I've voted twice. I got my gun license, got my medical license, so I'm at full speed."
Oz also talked about issues affecting Pennsylvania, including COVID-19 and health care. In addition, he discussed what is happening with his TV show now that he is a candidate.
