Allianz empowers Soweto school to improve educational outcomes

Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty (AGCS) Africa empowered Diepdale Secondary School in Diepkloof, Soweto to improve their matric pass rate from 58.9% in 2017 to 80.4% in 2018 through the Allianz Maths & Science Center, which was launched last year. Mathematics increased from 46.1% to 59.2%. Physical science moved from 41.6% to 75%. Life sciences increased from 30.4% to 82.7%. The center was established in April 2018 in partnership with the SA Medical & Education (SAME) Foundation to enable learners from grade 8 – 12 to improve in mathematics, physical science and life sciences.

“I would like to thank SAME Foundation for implementing this center and for providing the training and guidance, which enabled teachers and learners to improve educational outcomes in key subjects,” says AGCS Africa CEO Thusang Mahlangu. “Importantly, I would like to congratulate the leadership team, learners, educators, parents and the school governing body for their achievement. We will continue to work closely with them to help them achieve their target of a 90% pass rate in matric.”

SAME Foundation commented on the key performance indicators of the center which focused on the morale and confidence of learners and teachers, improved results in key subjects, increase in the overall pass rate as well as growing the number of learners who qualify to study at university. “A significant number of educators and learners reported that their confidence and morale had increased after the establishment of the center through the survey we conducted,” said SAME Project Manager, Tyrone Pols. “These shows in the results as the bachelor pass rate increased by 30%. Pass rates for grade 8 improved from 54% to 69%, grade 9 from 14% to 39% and grade 10 from 15% to 32%.”

AGCS Africa is working with 1st Things 1st to establish a Saturday school program in 2019 to further boost the school’s educational outcomes. The program will focus on English, mathematics, technology, economic management science, creative arts and natural science from grade 8 to 10.
