- SIXTEEN-year-old, Tebatso Sekoaleng from Alexandra, to represent South Africa and the rest of the continent at Allianz Junior Football Camp in Germany
- He will join 56 others from 25 nations between the ages of 14 – 16
- The camp includes meeting FC Bayern stars, penalty shootout with German football legend, Oliver Kahn, and participation in innovation and digital activities beyond football.
Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty (AGCS) Africa selected 16-year-old, Tebatso Sekoaleng, from Minerva High School to represent South Africa and the rest of the continent at the Allianz Junior Football Camp (AJFC) in Munich, Germany, from August 27 – 31, 2018. He was one of the top three aspiring footballers scouted by football legend, Maimane Phiri, out of almost 50 from six schools in Alexandra at the Allianz Football Tournament held in June at the Three Square Sports Ground in Alexandra.
“We are proud to have South Africa represented for the first time at AJFC in 2018 by a determined, committed, and talented young player in Sekoaleng. For Allianz, this is testament to the fact that we are enabling young players to reach their goals. Through the AJFC, Allianz and FC Bayern are taking football to the next level to enable Sekoaleng and other teenagers around the world, to explore trust, confidence and change on and off the pitch,” says Thusang Mahlangu, CEO of AGCS Africa.
The other players who completed the top three finalists are Realogile High’s Kabelo Seopa and Lebogang Dolo from Alexandra High. Sekoaleng, a left and back winger for Highlands Park juniors, was chosen following an assessment based on passion for football, digital technology and future topics. He is the only player from the African continent and will join 56 others from 25 nations between the ages of 14 – 16 at AJFC, which is now in its 10th year.
Maimane Phiri was impressed with Tebatso’s passion for football. “Tebatso is a well-balanced footballer and he has great potential. He has great football skills, tactical awareness and he behaves well on and off the pitch. He has also shown a good grasp of digital technology and future topics such as health and mobility. The AJFC will enable him to grow his football knowledge and skills, which will increase his chances of success in football in future.”
Hosted by Allianz and FC Bayern, the five day packed program includes penalty shootout with former German football goalkeeper, Oliver Kahn, as well as meeting former German astronaut, Gerhard Thiele, and young robot-maker, Valeria Cagnina. The players will also be trained by FC Bayern youth coaches and participate in innovation and digital activities beyond football to understand how the next generation will deal with the up and coming challenges they may have to face.
“This is a dream come true. I have been playing football with the hope of getting international exposure and now it’s finally happening. I am proud of myself, because I was hungry for the opportunity and worked hard. I am very excited and look forward to travel and experience football outside South Africa," says Sekoaleng.
To add to the experience, the young player will also get an opportunity to bid farewell to professional footballer, Bastian Schweinsteiger, on August 28 live at the Allianz Arena in the match between FC Bayern and Chicago Fire.
