Program Overview

The AICPA Foundation was established in 1922 to advance accounting as a learned profession and promote its future through accounting education and outreach; scholarships and fellowships; and diversity and inclusion.

The AICPA Foundation Fellowship for Accounting Doctoral Students seeks to support CPAs with recent accounting experience who want to serve as role models and mentors to young people in the academic environment.

Multiple $15,000 fellowships will be awarded to CPAs starting or already pursuing a full-time accounting Ph.D. or DBA degree at an AACSB-accredited accounting/business school who demonstrate significant potential to become accounting educators. The fellowship may be renewable for up to three consecutive years from the initial award. Current fellows must provide proof of enrollment and program progress for award renewal. Priority will be given to applicants of diverse ethnic backgrounds and underrepresented ethnic minorities in the accounting profession.

Program Background

This program brings together the AICPA Fellowship for Minority Doctoral Students, the Accounting Doctoral Students program (ADS), and the William (Bill) Ezzell Scholarship; in honor of William F. Ezzell, Jr. into one Fellowship for Accounting Doctoral Students.

Bill Ezzell was a driving force and inspiration for these programs and believed that the best way to encourage the next generation of CPAs was to put educators in the classroom with relevant and recent real-world experience. The AICPA Foundation continues to honor Bill’s passion and legacy by providing financial assistance to CPAs pursuing their doctoral accounting studies. Further, five fellows each year will also be noted as recipients of the Bill Ezzell Award; while this award does not provide additional funding for the year, it will be an added honor bestowed on the top candidates for the Fellowship.
