Our mission is to protect human health and the environment.
About us
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) mission is to protect human health and the environment. EPA works to ensure that: - Americans have clean air, land and water; - National efforts to reduce environmental risks are based on the best available scientific information; - Federal laws protecting human health and the environment are administered and enforced fairly, effectively and as Congress intended; - Environmental stewardship is integral to U.S. policies concerning natural resources, human health, economic growth, energy, transportation, agriculture, industry, and international trade, and these factors are similarly considered in establishing environmental policy; - All parts of society--communities, individuals, businesses, and state, local and tribal governments--have access to accurate information sufficient to effectively participate in managing human health and environmental risks; - Contaminated lands and toxic sites are cleaned up by potentially responsible parties and revitalized; and - Chemicals in the marketplace are reviewed for safety. The agency was founded in 1970 and is headquartered in Washington, District of Columbia with ten additional regional headquarters offices (Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, Denver, San Francisco, and Seattle) as well as more than a dozen laboratories, and other regional and programmatic offices.

Meet Alison! 👋 As a senior executive in EPA’s Office of Research and Development, Alison plays a key role in furthering our mission. We chatted with her about new career opportunities in her office, and what it’s like to be a leader at EPA ⬇️ “My journey into environmental work is deeply personal. Growing up near agriculture, particularly living next to a hog farm that my dad managed, I witnessed first-hand the environmental impacts of commercial agriculture.” Alison credits EPA with giving her the opportunity to make a tangible difference every day. “My role is Director of the Office of Resource Management –we make the science that drives our mission possible.” In her role as a director, Alison’s work is all about the bigger picture. “As a senior executive, you are no longer a subject matter expert--my job is about setting strategy and making connections.” “A big part of my job is addressing challenges that can keep our scientists from having what they need to support healthy and thriving environments for all.” “I have the honor of working alongside some of the world's foremost experts in ecology, toxicology, atmospheric modeling, risk assessment, and more.” One of her favorite parts of her work is the programs she leads to champion environmental consciousness. “I spearhead programs…to reduce waste, water, energy consumption, and enhance our energy efficiency. This role is not just a job, but a commitment to a sustainable future, and it's a responsibility I take with great pride.“ As a leader, Alison gets to influence EPA’s work culture. “My leadership style has always been "people first, then mission." If we can create an environment where all are supported and grow, the organization will continuously improve.” Being a public servant fills her with purpose and joy. “I'm excited about the opportunity to hire a Deputy Director for ORM and find a partner who shares my passion for our mission.” Want to work with Alison and be a leader for positive change? National DNA Day? Who knew?! Marine environments host organisms of all shapes and sizes, but how do we quantify biodiversity when organisms are too small to see? We're working on new techniques to identify diversity using environmental RNA metabarcoding. This research is among the first of its kind to compare eRNA and eDNA to analyze diversity in microscopic communities, estuaries, and sediments. While too small to see, microorganisms are vital components of food webs and are important for a healthy ecosystem! #DNADay24 Learn more about biodiversity in estuaries and other marine habitats ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/e8ArMDqA
