Our peer-reviewed article “Selecting soil hydraulic properties as indicators of soil health: Measurement response to management and site characteristics” is one of the 10 most-cited articles published in ASA, CSSA, SSSA’s Soil Science Society of America Journal. The study evaluated over 30 soil health measurements at 124 long-term agricultural research sites across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, comparing physical soil health measurements to determine which are most useful for characterizing the water cycle in soils. Several U.S. Regenerative Cotton Fund staff recently attended a soil health workshop organized by the Association of Texas Soil and Water Conservation Districts, with support from SHI, at the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Center at Texas A&M University-Kingsville in Kingsville, Texas. The two-day event consisted of field tours to local farms and ranches, a demonstration of the Natural Resources Conservation Service’s rainfall simulator, presentations, and a Q&A session with local researchers, farmers, and ranchers. Soil Health Educator Emily Ball spoke about SHI’s soil sampling work in Texas and other projects throughout the country. Kate VanderZaag and her husband both have backgrounds in crop science – they know a lot about crop nutrition and pest management for growing top-quality potatoes. But a revelation changed everything: Soil is alive and complex; requiring tailored care in each field to improve soil health every year. Now, their passion lies in safeguarding this vital resource to keep growing potatoes for generations to come. The Soil Health Institute thanks McCain Foods for the financial support that made this production possible. View the episode: https://zurl.co/zgQT.
