Our apprentices with Wayne Community College were honored last week for completing their programs and reaching the journeyman level in their trades, a well-deserved accomplishment. During the recognition ceremony, Smithfield Foods' Clarence Scott encouraged the apprentices to remember that this is proof that they can overcome any challenge stating, “Take the time to relish your accomplishments because this is something that nobody gave to you; this is something that you earned. Be proud."

Supporting our communities and empowering the next generation of industry leaders through access to education are top priorities for Smithfield Foods. In support, we proudly presented a $5,000 check to the Sampson Community College Foundation to fund scholarships for high school seniors planning to enroll in the animal science program or agriculture related studies at Sampson Community College. Students receiving funding are from Clinton, Hobbton, Lakewood, Midway or Union counties, which are located near our Clinton, NC facility and hog production operations.

In 2024, the second year of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library in Isle of Wight County, VA, Smithfield Foods donated $12,000 to The DeGood Foundation, a local Imagination Library partner, to expand access of the book-gifting program. To date, 45% of eligible children in Isle of Wight County have been enrolled, with more than 7,600 books distributed to over 600 children in the county. We are extremely proud to enter this next "chapter" with the DeGood Foundation.

At Smithfield, we are proudly celebrating the first graduate of our Farm Leadership Program, Kristalee Sanders of James Sprunt Community College. This program, developed specifically for working adults, combines on-the-job training with community college education. Program graduates earn an Associate of Applied Science degree in swine management that is transferrable to a four-year school, as well as a journeyman’s license preparing them for a career and future in animal agriculture. While completing this program, Kristalee has worked for Smithfield Hog Production in Jones County, NC and was recently promoted to farm manager. Congratulations Kristalee!

Smithfield Foods helped take a bite out of hunger in our local community this week as we sponsored "Tastefully Yours" for the tenth year in a row. This annual fundraising event for the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank raised enough to provide 450,000 meals to our neighbors in need facing food insecurity.
