Student Opportunity & Achievement Resources Program (SOAR)

Student Opportunities & Achievement Resources Program

A holistic support program dedicated to welcoming and retaining underrepresented minority students at Virginia Tech and promoting their success through campus collaborations.

JumpStart

Established in 2021, JumpStart is a pre-college program orientation program for students who successfully complete the BCI (Black College Institute) summer program, and are now entering their freshmen year here at VT. Students engage in a 3 day program that focuse on acclimation to campus, introduction to resources, offices, academic buildings, and people. The goal is to continue to strengthen the pipeline that is being built from rising high school juniors to college graduates. For more information about JumpStart, please contact SOAR by email at inclusivevt@vt.edu.

Our Vision

Our vision is to create a socially just and inclusive community, where students thrive in their experiences with diversity.

Our Mission

A holistic support program dedicated to welcoming and retaining underrepresented minority students at Virginia Tech and promoting their success through campus collaborations.

Virginia Tech has set forth ambitious goals as part of InclusiveVT efforts. In the spirit of community, diversity, and excellence, InclusiveVT is the institutional and individual commitment to Ut Prosim (that I may serve). One initiative of InclusiveVT is Project 2022, which is the first of several pilots related to increasing student diversity. Project 2022 seeks to increase underrepresented minority student enrollment to 25% by 2022. In addition, Virginia Tech seeks to eliminate the graduation gap for underrepresented minority students. To complement existing resources and offices, the Student Opportunities and Achievement Resources (SOAR) program, implemented in spring 2019, is a unique partnership with the academic colleges, as part of the InclusiveVT structure.
