At least five residents at a Massachusetts nursing home have died of COVID-19 following an outbreak at the facility.According to weekly data from the state's Department of Public Health, more than 30 residents and staff at the Sunny Acres Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chelmsford have tested positive for the coronavirus.In an update posted to the facility's website on Wednesday, Sunny Acres administrator Jeff Schwartz has been working closely with the DPH and the Chelmsford Board of Health after routine COVID-19 testing conducted in late September revealed that several residents had tested positive for the virus."The good news is that many of our residents have moved past their 14 day isolation period, and on the road to recovery," Schwartz wrote Wednesday. "We are monitoring their progress very closely."According to Schwartz, Sunny Acres had not produced a positive COVID-19 test among its residents or staff for the 15 weeks prior to the recent positive results. The facility had also conducted about 1,600 PCR tests during this period, he said.The Boston Herald reports that state health officials have been monitoring the outbreak at Sunny Acres as far back as Oct. 9. In his update, Schwartz indicated that the facility has been receiving support from infection control specialists, and that they are following all state and federal COVID-19 guidance.Chelmsford is currently one of the 77 Massachusetts communities that are currently at high risk of the coronavirus. Each of those communities has a rate of average daily cases that is greater than eight per 100,000 over the past 14 days.According to the DPH, Chelmsford had a rate of 9.2 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 in the last two weeks.
