Fauci warns US headed in wrong direction on coronavirus

Top government infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci said the country is on the wrong path in the fight against the coronavirus.

“I think it’s pretty obvious … that we are not going in the right direction,” Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said in an interview with the American Medical Association. “We need to realize that if we do not adhere to the guidelines as we’re trying to open, and I don’t mean officially, I mean the citizenry, the people that are out there, we’re going to be in some serious difficulty.”

Fauci added, “If you look at the number of cases, it’s quite disturbing. We’re setting records, practically every day, in the new cases that are reported.”

Cases of the coronavirus increased a record 52,789 in the U.S. on Wednesday. Arizona, California, and Texas reported record highs of new deaths.

Fauci suggested the progress made in areas such as New York and New Jersey could be undone by outbreaks in other areas of the country.

“The whole enterprise could be at risk,” Fauci warned.
