An invaluable guide to help teens thrive in today’s complex world.”
—Jill Petersen & Mary Frances, cofounders of Girls Mentorship—a company dedicated to the personal growth and development of teen and tween girls

“In
The Emotionally Intelligent Teen, Melanie McNally does what she does best: speaks to teens in their language with compassion and authority. The book’s combination of information and narrative draws in the reader and offers a relatable mirror to what they may be going through or have witnessed in their own lives, while offering tools for response that highlight self-awareness and mindfulness. This is a powerful resource for adolescents (and adults!) and one I plan to pass on to my own kids.”
—Casey O’Roarty, MEd, parent coach, positive discipline lead trainer, speaker, author, and host of the Joyful Courage podcast

“I love how Melanie McNally uses real-life examples to help teens understand emotional intelligence and how it can affect their daily lives. For example, she lays out so clearly the descriptions of all the different emotional skills, and uses metaphors for mood and emotion so that both teens and adults can comprehend. This book should be foundational reading for any teenager before heading into adulthood. I can’t wait to get the book into my own teenager’s hands!”
—Therese’ Connolly, LCSW, CCC, parent and family coach for parents of tweens and teens, host of The Single Parent Reset Show podcast, and single parent to a teen boy and a dog named Red

“Melanie McNally has gifted teens, and the adults who love them, with a powerful resource to begin creating a life they’ll love. Her expert knowledge of how to manage the real challenges young people face shines through on every page. Readers will love
The Emotionally Intelligent Teen for its clear introduction to the language of emotional intelligence, and exercises that empower teens to try on new mental health skills.”
—Chanel Dokun, cofounder of Healthy Minds NYC, and author of Life Starts Now

“Melanie McNally’s book is a groundbreaking lifeline for teens and their unique struggles. She connects with the reader using easily accessible language and compelling case examples. McNally makes abstract concepts clear, and offers an arsenal of helpful tools. I highly recommend
The Emotionally Intelligent Teen.”
—Larry Maucieri, PhD, ABPP-CN, board-certified clinical neuropsychologist, and coeditor of The Distracted Couple

“McNally’s book creatively provides hands-on tools that teens can easily learn, practice, and apply in everyday interactions with peers, family, and self! More than ever, teens need these skills to learn to ‘go deeper’ versus ‘coasting’ as she describes, allowing them to grow into emotionally intelligent adults. Teens will develop self-awareness, mindfulness, and self-regulation skills through interactive journal entries and ‘vibe checks.’ This book should be on every teen’s shelf!”
—Kristen Markovich, PsyD, clinical psychologist; and private practice owner in Schaumburg, IL

This book helped me understand the challenges my children (and students) are facing and exactly what they are going through. Dr. McNally really seems to "get" teens and understands the unique struggles they are all facing today and provides great strategies to help them navigate through these challenges. I like that she provides tools and goals for them while making it clear that they must do the work. This book has helped me as both a parent and an educator.

As a licensed clinical psychologist, I not only personally enjoyed this book and found it very helpful but will be recommending it to my teen and adult patients who are interested in building or growing their emotional intelligence. Dr. McNally wrote this book in an extremely accessible way, defining psychology terms in a way that the reader can relate to and apply them in their own life. She does a beautiful job of operationalizing steps to create emotional awareness, regulate emotions (defining what some people may do to passively or actively cope with emotions), and how to build empathy. Her references are clinically based without reading like an article, and her examples that demonstrate what a lack of these skills look like alongside what an example of these skills look like help the reader to clearly define their choices in similar situations. Dr. McNally offers prompts and encouragement in how to use the book that were well thought out. I was particularly excited to see that she integrated Cognitive Behavioral Therapy interventions in a way that was simple yet robust. I will be recommending this book to anyone interested in personal development!

Preparing for two teenage girls is on my mind! This book unlocked many foundational tools to work with my younger girls on as we progress into the teenage years. It’s written for teens and I will be giving this book to my daughters in a few years.

I wish I had this book as a teen and I wish many other adults knew these skills. We’re all just teenagers at heart…with some additional years!

Thanks Dr. Melanie for writing this book!

I've been gifting this book to all the teens (and their parents) that I know! This book is an incredible how-to guide for teens who feel overwhelmed, anxious, and are feeling self-doubt. I have witnessed how the strategies mapped out in this book have changed the game for kids ages 13-22. I cannot recommend this enough for kids or parents who don't know what to do to navigate the challenges life throws at us.

What I love about this book is it is for tweens and teens. It isn't a 'parenting' book, although it's helpful for parents to read, it's for the children.

I work in a mental health field and gave this book to one of our counselors who works with teens and tweens to copy pages out of at times. Again, we often give tools and resources to parents, but I love that this empowers the teen/tween with their own tools and resources. Plus I know Mel and have followed her for a while and she always gives great advice in a wonderful context for all family members.
