North Carolina Department of Transportation’s East End Connector I-885

The East End Connector for I-885 provides a vital transportation option that redirects traffic, especially truck traffic, from local streets near Durham. The East End Connector not only connects two highways, but it also provides a new crossing over a major railroad corridor – formerly a barrier with limited mobility options in Durham. The project included an interchange at Carr Road on U.S. 70 to improve community connectivity and featured bicycle, pedestrian and improved safety benefits that did not previously exist. From significantly reducing travel times to improving local connectivity, North Carolina DOT’s project prioritized multi-modal components that benefit drivers and active transportation users in the community.
