Texas Department of Transportation— Border West Expressway

With congestion plaguing Interstate 10, making it hard for travelers to travel through El Paso to New Mexico, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) began work on the $640 million Border West Expressway. The 7.4-mile roadway runs along the U.S./Mexico border and creates a loop around the city. TxDOT worked collaboratively with several partners on this project, as the Expressway runs parallel to Interstate 10, several railroads, and Rio Grande River. Since the Expressway was completed, TxDOT has seen a reduction in the amount of bottlenecks and congestion on I-10, as there is now an alternative road that allows travelers to get from one side of the city to the other (as well as to New Mexico) faster. In addition to the faster travel times for drivers, there has also been an improvement in incident response times, which means saving lives.
