Virginia Department of Transportation’s Interstate 95 Northbound Variable Speed Limits, Mile Markers 115-130

Interstate 95 is vital for north-south travel on the East Coast for people, goods, and freight. To reduce recurring crashes and keep traffic flowing in and around Fredericksburg, Virginia DOT activated variable speed limits over 15 miles of I-95 northbound. By gradually slowing traffic as it approaches congestion, the risk of crashes is reduced, along with stop-and-go travel conditions. The $10 million project displays variable limits between 35 miles per hour and 70 miles per hour, which are paired with dynamic message boards alerting the public to the speed limit. Since its implementation, there has been a significant reduction in the number of drivers traveling at high speeds on Interstate 95, along with a decrease of more than 20 percent in severe crashes resulting in fatalities and injuries.
