Arizona Department of Transportation – Fourth Street Bridge over Interstate 40

The Arizona Department of Transportation improved safety for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians – especially school children who walk across to and from a neighboring school in Flagstaff – through the replacement of the Fourth Street Bridge over Interstate 40. In partnership with the City of Flagstaff, the $13.9 million Fourth Street Bridge project widened the bridge over Interstate 40: adding capacity for vehicle as well as barrier-separated pedestrian and bicycle facilities. The project also added a northbound multi-use path and access to the Flagstaff Urban Trail System. The previous bridge had single-span bridges in eastbound/westbound direction, with pedestrians and bicyclists competing with traffic to cross the bridges and facing traffic congestion daily in morning and peak afternoon travel times. Due to those safety and mobility improvements, additional commercial and residential developments are being planned, allowing the community to grow.
