Oklahoma Department of Transportation— SH-33 Safety Corridor

Increasingly heavy truck congestion near a concentrated energy production facility was causing fatalities and additional safety concerns for drivers. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) had to take action to address these concerns, but could not do it alone. The solution was a data-driven approach, collaborating with both oil and natural gas to form the “Energize for Safety Coalition” in 2018. In 2019, the group selected a 25-mile stretch of State Highway 33 as the pilot for the Safety Corridor – erecting new signage, widening roadway shoulders and resurfacing projects. The Coalition also developed a curriculum and sponsored events that educated high school students on sharing the road with trucks and heavy equipment. These efforts saw a 46 percent reduction in crashes. Now, all drivers—especially the next generation—can stay safe while traveling this corridor.
