Anna Karenina

Thomas Mann once named Leo Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina" "the greatest social novel of world literature." When reading the novel, John Neumeier was deeply fascinated by Tolstoy's work: not only by the main characters and the plot, but also by the extraordinary variety of thematic connections. It is a story of three families. More...

Préludes CV

Don't try to understand this ballet. It has no "story" (that I could tell you) aside from the many stories that you yourself might sense, remember, or recognize while hearing this music and seeing the accompanying movement images. Surely, each of you might suggest very different stories... More...

On Tour to the Nervi Festival

To mark the glittering conclusion of John Neumeier's 51-year era as Chief Choreographer and Director of the Hamburg Ballet, the company will make a guest appearance at the international Nervi Music Ballet Festival 2024 on July 19 and 20. On the initiative of Genoese First Soloist Jacopo Bellussi, designated Artistic Director of the Nervi Ballet Festival from 2025, the Hamburg Ballet will present John Neumeier's adaptation of William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in the open-air theatre in the enchanting setting of the Nervi Parks. The Nervi Music Ballet Festival continues the great tradition of the historic Nervi Ballet Festival founded by Mario Porcile in 1954, which was one of the most important festivals on the European dance scene until the early 2000s. The Hamburg Ballet was a guest at the Nervi Ballet Festival in 1996 with the ballets "The Odyssey" and "Romeo and Juliet". More...

Demis Volpi First Season

Dear Audience, For my first season as Artistic Director of the Hamburg Ballet, I have decided to shape it with the idea of a "prologue" in mind. A prologue is not a first chapter, but rather a gradual introduction of ideas and intentions. Not everything is immediately apparent; a seed is planted so that it can grow and develop. An artistic change after 51 years means a significant adjustment for everyone involved – for the company, for all staff members, and, of course, for the audience. It is important for us to give time for the new to develop, with everyone together, so that the new also feels familiar and like it belongs. More...
