“It was songs that I was on with Wayne that people never knew I was on.”

Last fall, 2 Chainz partnered with Atlantic Records to form his own label, The Real University (T.R.U.) and now the first full-length project from the joint venture is on the way. On the latest episode of For The Record, 2 Chainz and his roster of artists, including Skooly, Sleepy Rose, Hott LockedN & Worl, all sat down with Genius' Head of Artist Relations Rob Markman to discuss their new compilation album, No Face No Case, and the upstart label.

It’s no secret that Atlanta has become the epicenter of hip-hop culture in recent years, and 2 Chainz hopes his label will build on that momentum. He ultimately decided to launch a label of his own because he felt it was time to share his “resources” and propel a young Atlanta artist to stardom. The rapper-turned-label-boss said seeing the success of other Atlanta-based labels like Coach K and Pee’s Quality Control Music and Young Thug’s Young Stoner Life Records is especially inspiring.

“I want to share my blessings and I wanted to come up with a label because I am looking at the trends that QC is doing, that YSL is doing, all the labels of that caliber,” 2 Chainz said.

2 Chainz also looked back on the early days of his career and revealed that he was originally featured on Lil Wayne’s 2008 hit “Mrs. Officer,” along with Bobby Valentino and Kidd Kidd. 2 Chainz said not making the final cut of the song helped him learn a valuable lesson: patience.

“You always think it’s your time, but I’m happy my time didn’t come until it came,” 2 Chainz said.
