With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear curated by the Levels team. We sort through all the new songs—across all the platforms and subgenres—so you don’t have to. Thank us later.

Bizzy Banks - “Don’t Start”

In the last three weeks, Bizzy Banks has emerged as the latest up-and-comer in Brooklyn drill. Lately, so much of the scene’s music is difficult to distinguish from the next, with only a few artists—Pop Smoke, Mauley G, Sheff G—separating themselves. On “Don’t Start,” Bizzy Banks tackles an instrumental that begins with a minute of dreary, funeral-ready piano before the traditional drill drum kit kicks in. Most rappers in Brooklyn would either wait for the beat to drop or fill that minute with useless shit talk, but Bizzy Banks decides to insert a fiery and muffled verse that sounds like he recorded it at a drive-thru window. It’s a minute of weirdness in a scene that’s often not weird enough. And once the drums enter, his vocals clear up, and you’re hooked. Small moments of random freaky shit make a difference.
