Credit Union SACTOWN Run returns Sunday, children's hospitals benefit
The Credit Union SACTOWN Run kicked off at Capitol Mall on Sunday morning.
More than 2,000 people participated in the different races and festivities.
Proceeds from the event support children's hospitals, including the UC Davis Children's Hospital in Sacramento.
"It's the perfect time of year, perfect weather, and gets us outside and active," said Joey Fleeman, a runner in the event.
Race Director Scott Abbott called The Credit Union SACTOWN Run a "rite of Spring in Sacramento."
There's a Miracle Mile for kids, a 5K, and a 10-Mile Championship Run.
"We have top master's runners from all over the United States come here to Sacramento to participate in this event," Abbott said.
Runners received medals for crossing the finish line. The real winners are children's hospitals. The event has helped raise $2.5 million for the Children's Miracle Network in the last 13 years.
Runners were happy to do their part.
"It feels amazing. It feels good to give back to the community. I love it. I will be here next year," Bianca Olaya said.
Many families participated for the first time. Laura Barajas and her mother share a name, and on Sunday they shared their first race.
"I feel ready to run another one," daughter Laura Barajas said.
"I just wanted to do it with my daughter," mother Laura Barajas said.
Organizers were proud that this year's SACTOWN Run raised $210,000 for the Children's Miracle Network.
The money stays in Sacramento and benefits the UC Davis Children's Hospital.
