What does a pool contractor do?

A pool contractor is the person who will oversee the construction of a pool installation. This job differs from the pool designer as well as from the workers constructing the pool. Pool contractors manage the building, repair, or remodeling of pools, hot tubs, and other water projects. Their responsibilities include monitoring the:

  • Assembly of the pool
  • Installation of the filtration system
  • Installation of pipes
  • Workers

Some pool contractors subcontract jobs to a third-party while others work with a small tight-knit team. Before making your selection, confirm the pool contractor is licensed, ask about their experience, and read reviews on their BBB business profile.

Process and timeline of a pool installation

Swimming pool installations are amongst the largest home renovation projects homeowners can undertake. In-ground pool installations are permanent, expensive, and time-consuming projects. However, an in-ground pool has the potential to increase the value of your home.

The construction of a standard in-ground concrete pool has many steps:

  1. Initial inspection
  2. Design
  3. Permit gathering
  4. Excavation
  5. Building of the pool walls
  6. Installation of filtration, lighting, or heating systems
  7. Filling of the pool with water

The average timeline of a concrete in-ground pool installation falls somewhere between 3-4 months. However, many issues can arise during the construction that may delay the process. Permits, zoning inspections, bad weather, contractor scheduling conflicts, and unexpected excavation issues can alter the original timeline.

Above-ground vs. In-ground pools

Above-ground and in-ground pools differ in three key areas. Consider your priorities when determining your pool type.

  • Safety: Above-ground pools statistically are responsible for fewer accidents. However, a secure fence and monitoring system can greatly reduce the likelihood of accidents in an in-ground pool.
  • Cost: An in-ground pool installation is more expensive than an above-ground pool. Homeowners will need to hire a pool contractor, builders, and designer to properly install a pool. However, above-ground pools can often require a professional pool installation as well, depending on the size. The daily maintenance cost for in-ground and above-ground pools are nearly the same.
  • Durability: An in-ground pool is less likely to be damaged than an above-ground pool. In-ground pools have a longer lifetime than above-ground pools due to the type of materials used and the way it is constructed into the earth.
