Chinese Loans to Africa Database – Data Update

Over the past 22 years, Chinese development finance institutions, commercial banks, government entities, companies and other financiers have provided an estimated 1,243 loans amounting to $170.08 billion to 49 African governments and seven regional institutions. These loans have financed considerable infrastructure, energy and development projects throughout Africa.

Since 2016, annual financing has been steadily declining, from a peak of $28.45 billion to $994.48 million in 2022. Chinese loans to Africa appear to have entered a new state of lending, wherein smaller scale, targeted projects have replaced the mega infrastructure projects typical of previous years.

What trends are characterizing Chinese loans to Africa in the post-pandemic era? Which countries and sectors have received financing in recent years? And what factors are likely to shape Chinese lending to Africa in the years to come?
