The Canada-based Bozzini Quartet is joined in Orford Church by soprano Juliet Fraser for a programme of Beethoven, Bach and Festival featured composer Cassandra Miller.

A concert of two pieces by Cassandra Miller alongside the works that inspired them. Miller’s new piece Thanksong is based on the third movement of Beethoven’s late Op.132 Quartet: quiet, inwardly focused and full of gratitude. The Quartet and Juliet Fraser each perform independently, as if they were five soloists. The quartet members play by ear (with the aid of simplified notation), listening in headphones to Miller’s pre-recorded voice – and the composition is held together by the pacing and breath of Juliet Fraser, as she sings Beethoven’s line as slowly and quietly as possible.

Miller uses an extract of Bach’s Chaconne as the material for About Bach, which is recognisably linked to its source but also detached and mesmeric.

The Bozzini Quartet have been an original voice and strong advocate in new, experimental and classical music since 1999, thriving off an ethos of risk-taking, experimentation and collaboration.
