America's Best Nursing Homes 2023

Finding a nursing home for a loved one can be a difficult experience. The practical and financial issues are complex and the emotional aspects can sometimes be overwhelming. The continuing threat of COVID-19 isn't making any of that easier. To try to make the process more manageable, Newsweek has once again partnered with respected global data research firm Statista to create our annual ranking of America's Best Nursing Homes.

This year's ranking identifies the nation's top 475 facilities and are awarded by state. Nursing homes in the 25 states with the highest number of facilities were included. The total number of awardees varies per state due to different numbers of total facilities in each state. In general, we awarded approximately the top 20 percent per state.

The rankings are based on four criteria including a performance data score, a reputation score and a COVID-19 Score. This year we have added a score for facilities accredited by the Joint Commission International, an independent, non-profit healthcare standards organization which has been accrediting facilities since 1951.

We hope you will find our ranking helpful in making your own nursing home choices.

METHODOLOGY
AMERICA'S BEST NURSING HOMES 2023 highlights the nation's top 475 nursing homes out of 11,722 analyzed. The rankings are based on four data sources: performance data, peer recommendations, handling of COVID-19 and accreditations. Nursing homes in the 25 states with the highest number of facilities, according to the centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for 2022 were included in the study.

Statista used CMS data to determine the performance of nursing homes. For peer recommendations, Statista invited over 10,000 medical experts (registered nurses, nursing home managers and administrators, licensed practical nurses/licensed vocational nurses, nursing assistants, therapists and physicians) to an online survey. Additionally, experts from all over the U.S. could participate in the survey of the Best Nursing Homes by State on newsweek.com. Email verification was required and self-recommendation was not possible. The survey data was collected from July to August 2022. Statista and Newsweek calculated a COVID-19 score for each facility, using CMS data, to identify nursing homes which have had the best possible response and protocols during the pandemic. For the first time, nursing homes accreditations from the Joint Commission International (JCI) have been added to the scoring model (where available).

The overall rating is the weighted average of the performance data score (35 percent), reputation score (35 percent, COVID-19 score (25 percent) and the accreditation score (5 percent). The best 475 nursing homes are awarded with a rank in their own state, resulting in 25 individual lists.

The rankings are composed exclusively of nursing homes that are eligible regarding the scope described in here.
A mention in the ranking is a positive recognition based on peer recommendations and publicly available data sources at the time. The ranking is the result of an elaborate process which, due to the interval of data collection and analysis, is a reflection of the last calendar year. Furthermore, events preceding or following the period August 31, 2021 to August 31, 2022 and/or pertaining to individual persons affiliated/associated to the facilities were not included in the metrics. The results of this ranking should not be used as the sole source of information for future deliberations. The information provided in this ranking should be considered in conjunction with other available information about nursing homes or, if possible, accompanied by a visit to a facility.
The quality of nursing homes that are not included in the rankings is not disputed.
