Marjorie Taylor Greene Wants Graphic Abortion Ads: 'Baby Gasping for Air'

Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has called for graphic anti-abortion ads showing fetuses "gasping for air," a day after Democrats and abortion rights activists scored a major win in Tuesday's elections.

In Ohio, voters passed a ballot measure that ensured reproductive rights in the state, including abortion access. In Virginia, Democrats took control of the legislature after Republicans campaigned on enacting a 15-week abortion "limit." Another major win was the reelection of Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, a Democrat who campaigned on abortion rights. He won against Republican Attorney General Daniel Cameron, who previously defended the state's strict abortion laws in court.

Abortion rights have been a major issue across the country since the Supreme Court overturned Roe V. Wade, in a landmark ruling that ended the federal constitutional right to abortion, in June 2022. Several conservative-leaning states have enacted abortion bans since, including Florida, where Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican candidate for president, signed a six-week abortion ban into law.

After Roe V. Wade was overturned, Greene celebrated the Supreme Court's decision on social media, calling it a "miracle." In a video posted on X, formerly Twitter, the Georgia Republican said at the time, "I think it's a miracle. I'm so thrilled, like I've cried about this." Greene added: "Everybody here is celebrating that the Supreme Court had the courage, they had the bravery, overturning Roe v. Wade, giving it back to the states."

On Wednesday morning, Greene posted about her thoughts on abortion and on the Democrats' "evil lies" that abortion is both a right and healthcare for women. She wrote on X, "Healthcare saves lives. Abortion kills lives."

"Republicans must stop being afraid to stand up to democrats disgusting lies about abortion," Greene said.

She suggested, "Producing ads that graphically show the truth of an abortion as a baby is being ripped apart or dies lying on a cold metal trey gasping for air after being ripped out of its mother's womb is the truth America needs to see versus the democrat's never ending ads lying to women that baby murder is their right."

"Too offensive? No not for America and definitely not for democrats," she added.

Newsweek reached out to Greene via email for comment.

Christina Reynolds, senior vice president for communications and content at EMILYs List, a political action committee aimed at electing women who support abortion rights, told Newsweek via email: "Voters have made clear in every election since the Dobbs decision that they want to control their own bodies, futures and freedom.

"Democrats are proud to stand with those voters in supporting abortion rights, and welcome an honest debate on the issue. Unfortunately, Republicans are more focused on either hiding their positions or pushing disinformation about the issue. Voters will see through that in November," Reynolds said.

Some social media users agreed with Greene's comments.

X user Kulakowski Jason commented: "Yes, we have a moral duty to protect those who can not protect themselves. Unborn children are the most innocent and defenseless form of life and we need to take a stand to protect them at all costs."

Another X user who goes by the name Downtown Fairy posted: "Notorious MTG spreading truth!!"

Meanwhile, others sarcastically pointed out that Greene's stance on abortion will not work for voters.

"Yes, After yesterday's elections. Please triple and quadruple down on complete abortion bans. Maybe throw in the death penalty for women who have abortions. This is definitely the way to win in 2024," William Buecker commented on X.

An X user who goes by Keith said: "This rhetoric, labeling women who need abortions as murderers, is why you lose. Keep doing it, please."
