About the Author

One of the things I learned as a medical student and resident is that in obstetrics you can have a lot to say about your outcome. In other words, you can pick your outcome much of the time-not all of the time-but certainly about 90 percent of the time. Pregnant women so often feel they shouldn't question the expert, the obstetrician. My goal is to provide pregnant women a safe arena where they can freely ask questions about their choices in their pregnancy and delivery. I can't offer you medical advice, but I can share with you my experiences with the 6000 babies I delivered.In today's medical environment, it is avery difficult to raise questions about your choices in your health care. I want to encourage women to have the confidence to trust in themselves and the decisions they make about their care.My patients helped me gain valuable insight into what turns a high-risk pregnancy into a low-risk one, and how to keep a low-risk pregnancy low risk. You won't find this information in medical texts. I have learned a lot over my years of delivering babies and I want to share this information with you. Your safety as a patient may well depend upon your knowing the things I talk about in this book. My goal is for every pregnant woman to have access to the kinds of information needed to guide her pregnancy and delivery towards the best possible outcome for herself and her family.

    Some young HR person once looked at my CV and asked me, quite seriously, if I had really done everything I had listed there. Well, yes. Because I am someone who can’t sit in a Morris Miller cubicle every day, much less for any great stretch of time. Once the problem is solved, I get bored and I’m ready to move on to the next challenge. This hasn’t afforded me any great stability in my work life. I simply arrive in places about ten years ahead of time. So far, at least, that penchant for early arrival hasn’t been accompanied with a pocketbook full of door handles.

    I have been observing the demise of health care in the U.S. for many years now. When I wrote Modern Medicine in 1992, I had already been in practice as an obstetrician for 15 years.

    Now, 30 years later, there are many more books available on the problems of our U.S. health care system, some of them by physicians like myself. The problems I wrote about 25 years ago are, unfortunately, still with us.

    The real solutions to our health care problems will come from physicians in the trenches, not committees sitting at conference tables.

Everyone needs this book! This is an approach to childbirth that is focused on the patient and baby. Listening to the mothers body, the activity of the baby, making decisions on THAT! That’s the direction that needs to be taken. Following that path will give the mother and baby or babies the results needed. Detours may be needed from the ‘typical or recommended timeline, it’s OK! Not every pregnancy follows the exact same path. This book explains that, helps you understand that. This book is a must have the hands of every expectant mother.

This excellent book is easy to read and understand. Wonderful ACTUAL real life experiences of patients and the many different scenarios you may encounter during your pregnancy from an OB who delivered over 6000 babies, with ZERO mortalities. An honest and factual must read for all new prospective parents, grandparents and those that love them.
