A Hefaza- e-Islam Bangladesh leader in Narayanganj, arrested in April in cases of violence, died in jail custody in Dhaka on Thursday.

The Narayanganj’s Sonargaon upazila unit vice president and Khelafat Majlish upazila unit president Iqbal Hossain, 55, died at the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital at around noon.

Iqbal was arrested on April 11 by a team of Rapid Action Battalion at Jurain in Dhaka and was implicated in six cases lodged with Sonargaon police station, family members said.

Jailor Shah Rafiqul Islam of Narayanganj district jail said that Iqbal was taken to the hospital on May 11 after he fell sick in the jail.

Iqbal’s brother in law Ali Khan said that Iqbal would be buried in Sonargaon.

After his arrest, Iqbal was remanded in custody in two cases, made statement to the judicial magistrate court and was sent to jail where he fell sick.

The cases against Iqbal were lodged for vandalising at a resort, house of a Juba League leader and local office of Awami League and attacking police on April 3 following Hefazat leader Mamunu Haque was kept confined for hours at the Sonargaon resort while passing private time with a woman whom he claimed to be his second wife.

Police arrested Mamunul at his madrassah in Mohammadpur area in Dhaka in cases related to violence during Hefazat’s protests against visit of Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India, to Bangladesh in late March at places of the country.
