Future of Our Inshore Fisheries is an industry-led project with the long-term aim of transforming how inshore fisheries are managed.
It brings active fisherman and industry leaders together with policy makers, regulators and academics. It’s aim is to ensure that our inshore fisheries are managed to deliver a viable and profitable inshore fishing industry that supports flourishing coastal communities.
Fisheries Management Plans (FMPs) will provide the framework to build and maintain sustainable UK fish and shellfish stocks. They set out policies for keeping stocks at sustainable levels, or restoring them to sustainable levels where needed. Their purpose is to support a vibrant, profitable, and sustainable fishing industry for current and future generations.

The Shellfish Industry Advisory Group (SIAG) provides a forum to discuss sustainability and management of UK shellfish fisheries.
The SIAG is focused on contributing to national-level strategic management of the UK’s shellfish fisheries. It acts as a central overarching committee, with members from around the UK. This enables the group to maintain oversight on all matters related to the management of shellfish fisheries.
A number of species-specific sub-groups operate under the SIAG. They work on matters related to specific stocks and fisheries. At the moment there are species sub groups focusing on management whelks and crab and lobster fisheries.

Finfish Industry Advisory Group
The Finfish Industry Advisory Group (FIAG) provides a forum to discuss sustainability and management of finfish fisheries. The group is a point of contact for all matters relating to the UK’s non-quota finfish species. This includes lemon sole, turbot, bass, brill, pilchards, red mullet, gurnards, john dory and others.
The FIAG brings together members of the finfish catching sector and the wider supply chain with government and the research community. Members work together to improve the sustainable management of these commercially important fisheries by engaging on national level fisheries management issues.
Project UK Fisheries Improvement Projects operate as a collaborative stakeholder partnership project facilitated by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). They aim to improve the environmental sustainability of selected UK fisheries.
They use the MSC’s Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) tools to identify areas for improvement within certain UK fisheries. Once an area of improvement is identified, FIP Action Plans are developed to deliver the identified improvements. Each FIP Action Plan is designed to improve the fishery so it can apply to be considered for full MSC certification.

The North Atlantic Pelagic Advocacy Group (NAPA) aims to improve pelagic fisheries management for the UK supply chain.
NAPA is a collective of retailers and supply-chain businesses with a commitment to sourcing sustainable seafood. This collective is using its voice to advocate for long-term, science-based management of North East Atlantic pelagic stocks: for prospering oceans and fisheries, and business security.
