The Mathematics Department currently has 14 full-time faculty members and approximately 50 mathematics majors. Parallel to the mission of the university in its vision and purpose, our faculty is committed to teaching excellence and providing an appropriate mathematical background to all University students. Our primary objective is to foster quantitative literacy by focusing on the ability to think critically and solve problems through oral and written communication.

Programs Offered

Our mathematics major program is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in the fundamental areas of mathematics such as calculus, linear algebra, probability and statistics, real analysis, and modern algebra, as well as provide students with a variety of interesting mathematical electives to enhance the major. Our major culminates with the opportunity for every student to do independent research with a faculty member. Math majors will graduate with the knowledge necessary to achieve success in graduate studies, a teaching career, or a variety of statistical and/or business careers.

The mathematics major is divided into three tracks: the traditional track, the actuarial science track, and the data science track. The traditional track suits students who want to teach math at the high school level, have prospects for graduate school, or who want broad-based mathematical knowledge that can open doors to a variety of careers. The actuarial science track is for students who want to pursue a career as an actuary (professionals who manage and measure risk and uncertainty). This track prepares students for their first three actuarial exams. This track prepares students to pass two actuarial exams: Exam P and Exam FM, and also prepares students with material towards Exam LTAM.  Sacred Heart University is one of the few universities in Connecticut included in the Society of Actuaries UCAP (Universities and Colleges with Actuarial Programs) list. The data science track readies students for careers in computer science, business, statistics, data mining, and big data, all of which are in demand. This track gives students the necessary skills in statistics, computer programming, and business to succeed in these careers.

In addition to educating the math majors, the Mathematics Program is designed to:

  • Provide science and professional majors with courses which give them the mathematical and statistical background for their fields and which highlight the wide applicability of mathematics.
  • Provide business majors with courses which give them a foundation in finite mathematics and calculus and which illustrate the relevance of mathematics to increasing complexities of the business world.
  • Provide liberal arts majors with the courses which give them an introduction to mathematical ideas and which promote an appreciation and understanding of the important role of mathematics within the broader curriculum.

The strengths of the department include small class sizes in developmental and major courses, emphasis on student/faculty interaction, and classroom instruction utilizing relevant software and technology.

Sacred Heart University is an institutional member of the Mathematical Association of America and the American Mathematical Society.
